words from poet Susan Durant

A Spiritual Experience
That is what this is –
all of it.
Once the volcano sends the mountain out
there is no way all of that can ever go back in.
Validate it!
Write it down!
When a crossroads comes, only hesitate to
imagine which road will be exciting enough to
make you willing to die to break clear the path.
Death is the turning point at which life’s value clarifies.
Take the shape of form to the very edge.
Where the cliff falls vertical, lean out.
The body is the wings the spirit needs to live.
Fly.
Without reprieve, keep open eyes.
The rainbow is relief.
No storm reduces what is changed to black and white.
Listen.
Just above the breeze the forest sings.
Move fast and slow at once with open hands.
Keep them arm’s length and free.
Outstretched arms with splayed hands make balance easier.
Breathe.
The feel of breath alone is sublime to
eternal mist that cannot, of itself, catch such wind.
Love like light.
A shadow cannot lean into light but only
disappear for its entire length to
reveal a greater space for anyone who
wishes to rest in the warmth of love’s luminescence.
Go inside.
Pull what is inside out.
When feathers fall the face is gone.
There is no need for any of this when you realize what you have is
not a hiding place but a temporary resting place from which spirit can glean.
Divinity is utterly obvious.
Cry.
You’ve found your wings.
Don’t waste one more moment of your momentary spirituality.
Let your spirit fly.
Your body is the wings the spirit needs to be alive.
